Introduction
Welcome to our in-depth guide to the The Platterklip Gorge trail up to the summit of Table Mountain. Barely a whisper away from the vibrant pulse of Cape Town, the splendor of Table Mountain extends an invitation that I find irresistible. In this bustling city, a stone’s throw from the urban sprawl, the Platteklip Gorge trail stretches upwards, promising the reward of panoramic vistas and a sense of accomplishment.
Most popular route up Table Mountain: Platteklip Gorge
Etching its way up the face of Table Mountain, Platteklip Gorge is no ordinary path. Its a steep trail that leads to the ‘table’ at the summit. The trail spans approximately 3.5 kilometers, usually taking a hiker two to three hours to conquer.
The Call to Fitness
The song of Platteklip Gorge is not one that every traveler can dance to. It demands a certain amount of strength and stamina. With an elevation gain of 700 meters over a distance of 2.5 kilometers, the trail requires a moderate to high level of fitness. The rocky nature of the trail means that those who struggle with uneven ground should take extra caution.
Although it is considered an easier trail to the mountain summit it also is by far the busiest route to the top and therefore sees far more rescues required than any other trail. Most of the rescues are unprepared hikers who have become dehydrated on the climb. I would highly recommend starting early to beat the heat of the day.
DRESSING FOR THE GORGE
Comfortable, Dry and Warm
Choosing the right clothing is essential, for the journey is as unpredictable as it is beautiful. Breathable, comfortable attire is the key. Avoid sweaty cotton against your skin. Instead try synthetic fabrics that wick away moisture, leaving you dry and comfortable. A rain jacket is a must even on sunny days. Remember that it might be a clear day in the city but the mountain gets a thick blanket of fog over it so often that locals call it the table cloth. When the cloth envelopes you the temperature will drop very dramatically and fast so be ready with something warm even on a hot sunny day
On the Feet
First prize on this hike would be sturdy hiking boots with a firm grip, that provide support as you traverse the rocky terrain. I personally prefer to hike in trail running shoes for shorter hikes like this if i am trying to do it fast and hiking boots if i want to extend the hike and come down a longer trail like Skeleton Gorge
The Sun
A hat and sunglasses are a must. You will be hiking us a steep trail in full sun almost no shade. If you are hiking in summer I recommend starting early to summit before the the day has a chance to heat up
In the Backpack
Must haves
Water
Snacks – if you run out there is a restaurant on top
Sunscreen
Rain Jacket
Warm clothing
Optional
Hiking poles
First aid kit
Torch
Emergency blanket
Whistle while this might seem like overkill for such a well trafficked trail I feel better having them with me in case I encounter an emergency or I am involved in one myself
Choosing Your Time: When to Hike
The best seasons to hike Platteklip Gorge are the cooler months, from March to November in the day or in the summer months, from December to February, can be harsh if you dont start early, the temperatures unforgiving, and the shade scarce. If you choose to hike during the summer pack lots of water.
Final Thoughts On Platterklip Gorge
The Platterklip Gorge hike, is perfect for if you are either short on time or fitness, otherwise I would recommend one of the other trails which offer more shade, scenery and a quiet trail. My personal favorites are Skeleton Gorge for the nature lover or India Venster for the hiker or who wants a more exciting trail
